I like a Gershwin tune, how about you?

Last week, Nashville-based singer Shelean Newman had a coming out party of sorts here in Los Angeles in advance of her upcoming debut release, Anything Goes. The event, held at The Mint on Pico, doubled as a release party for Swingin’ on the Moon, the latest album by Newman’s fellow Grand Vista label recording artist, Perry Danos. Both vocalists performed at the event and share the common goal of putting a fresh spin on standards of the Great American Songbook.

From her soft, lullaby take on George and Ira Gershwin’s Someone to Watch Over Me, to her almost alt rock/pop styling of the brothers’ Embraceable You, Shelean brings contemporary sensibilities to some of the most listenable classics without falling into the all too common trap of loungey cheese. And in her stewardship of these iconic tunes, she manages to pay homage to their creators without imitating celebrated renditions - thus showing the ultimate respect through creative reinvention.

On American Idol, where the challenge of covering popular songs is in the mainstream spotlight, the judges relentlessly advise singers to: 1. Pick a great song, 2. Make it your own, and 3. Sing it well. If that’s the recipe for success, then Shelean Newman is cooking it up with Anything Goes.
